Lead has two main meanings. It is a metal.

Or it is the present tense of the verb ‘to lead’, meaning to take charge or show the way.
He leads the company.
Led is the past tense of the verb ‘to lead’.
She led them to safety.
What causes the confusion?
Confusion usually arises between lead and led when it is used as a verb. Just ask yourself whether the action is present or past tense.
